White Rabbit

A stroll around the park with some rabbits and Jean!

I wanna talk a little bit about Jean’s second EP Perfect Pair which was released back in November. My favorite track on it is white rabbit. I think this track is such a masterful fusion of Jean’s two styles: R&B and hyperpop.

The EP has a storyline (it wouldn’t be a jjean work without one) and every song is about the same couple. According to Jean, Perfect Pair is about an #average sad loner boy who one day meets an absolute baddie of a girl, and the more they get to know each other the more he gets sucked into her "dangerous" world and influenced by her “bad” ways. In the end, the guy gradually turns just as “bad” as her, and the two of them, both at their low points and now outcasts, realize that only they can truly understand each other, but they're happy with this because “as long as they have each other, it’s not so bad”.

(fun fact: the actress for the #baddie in galaxy trip's MV is a half filipino baddie. jean always spotlights minorities/mixed people like him in his works!)

Something like that, I’m recapping what he yapped to us in a fanclub livestream months ago. But hell yes… I love fictional co-dependent madly in love “alone together” romances LOL. Also this is such a Jean thing for him to make. This is common knowledge amongst Jean fans, maybe not very apparent to others, but Jean is actually a very goody two shoes kind of boy, despite popular belief. It’s probably why he’s attracted to wild rule-breaking baddies who are the opposite of him.

So anyway, about the track white rabbit…

When the track list was released, this was the one I was looking forward to. Mostly because, as you know, Jean’s semi-official animal mascot is a white rabbit, and it’s what Jean fans like to associate themselves with.

So I was like oh thank god I like this track HAHAHA. Btw, my other favorite track is bottle babies!

white rabbit seems to be the track that illustrates the boy's mental state as his curiosity for the girl grows and he starts falling for her. The song starts out very sweet and slow, but there's always this subtle edge to it that gradually becomes more noticeable. The boy is like Alice in Wonderland, chasing after the white rabbit and spiraling deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole of her world, new and foreign to him, an analogy I really like. This concept culminates at the very end of the song with the sudden drop as the boy "falls" (GENIUS!!!) and Jean goes full hyperpop on us. Jean actually doesn’t go full in on earcrushing type of hyperpop very often, his roots are more R&B and lo-fi, so this is a rare occurrence, and one that I welcomed EXTREMELY (i am a hyperpop girlie sorry). I really liked how he musically illustrated the boy’s gradual descent into mad love, and how he kept building the hyperpop sounds more and more over time. This isn’t exclusive to this track either tbh, I think he illustrated this process of change that takes place throughout the whole EP, what with the opening track having acoustic piano to symbolize the boy’s innocence, an instrument we lose very quickly throughout the EP after white rabbit.

This EP is more R&B compared to his first EP, “acclimation”, which was more hyperpop, though this EP still has a lot of very pretty "hyperpop-ish" flourishes. The sound production is, as always, REALLY GOOD. I can enjoy both R&B and hyperpop, so I’m really happy. I hope Jean is able to keep making music that he loves, and I hope more people listen to him!!!
